I bought this mat as I needed a one with a bit more cushion as I expand my practice and learning. When I first received it, the mat was firm and had that unavoidable new mat smell which wasn't a major issue. As I also own a Manduka, I know from experience that any good quality mat needs to be properly broken in. Now that I've had it for a few weeks and have used it 4 times a week, it's really started to get more comfortable and a lot more usable. The new mat smell lingered on for a week or so, but went away easily after spraying it down after every use and letting it air dry. I alternated a tea tree and lavender mat cleaner that I make myself with essential oils, filtered water and white vinegar. My only wish would be for Gaiam to add a few inches to the length. Other than that, this is a great mat for the money!

This mat is way too firm for people that have arthritis or just need more of a cushion for the bones. I thought that the 8mm thickness would have some give but I did not realize that rubber was so hard unlike a PVC material mat. It was also too short in length. The stickiness was the only good point. This mat is useless to me so I donated it to my instructor's yoga studio.

I love this mat! PROS: It's quite thick and although it feels denser than others I've used it has good cushion and support. It's slightly sticky texture gives good security for hands and feet in downward dog even when I'm sweating like crazy in heated classes! I love the color. Wasn't sure I'd be grooving on the green but the shade is pretty and not as loud as I envisioned. CONS: It's heavy! Now if you are holding yoga poses it's not like you can't handle the weight of this thing but you'll want a strap or a bag to make the transport more easy. I bring it back and forth to class daily and it's not a big deal but as compared to other mats you notice the difference. The weight is in the quality for sure! Lastly, the lovely rubber core that gives all that great cushioning and support really smells like, well - rubber. I've used it for a couple weeks daily and it really still smells. Can't really tell if it's getting better yet but I'll put up with it for the quality. I just extra tea tree oil on it in class :-) I took one star off for the smell but otherwise it's a great mat.

Great mat to help you feel secure in your poses. Feels secure without being sticky, even when slightly damp from sweat. It does have a bit of a new mat smell, but that subsided after a week or so. I would have liked it to be a bit softer.
